Personalized phage therapy has moved far beyond the question of whether it works. The primary challenge today is making it a safe, high-quality, and workable option for patients having difficult-to-treat bacterial infections.

Our publication of the guideline “A consensus-based guideline for personalized bacteriophage therapy” is now published in Nature Medicine.

Bringing together work across six international expert groups, regulatory specialists, patient groups and others, the guideline outlines over 60 recommendations. As leader of Expert Group 6, our focus was mapping the research roadmap needed to advance the field.

Moving From Guidance to Infrastructure
Guidelines offer orientation, but infrastructure delivers results. To give clinicians a realistic route to offering personalized phage therapy, the next step is building capacity: establishing dedicated phage therapy centers and connected clinical networks capable of rapid diagnosis, preparation, and patient care.

Thank you to all colleagues involved, especially the Scientific Steering Committee of PhageNet DZIF – Maria J.G.T. Vehreschild, Annika Y. Classen, and Silvia Würstle – for driving this important initiative forward.
