At the Viruses of Microbes (VoM) Conference 2026 in Prague, Ian Molineux (University of Texas at Austin) received the ISMV Lifetime Award in recognition of his contributions to phage biology, including his work on phage T7.

During his speech, Ian recalled the spirit of earlier conferences 30 to 40 years ago. Looking back on past meetings, Ian contrasted the open, collaborative culture of earlier days with today’s more competitive environment and urged the phage community to rebuild that openness:
“People talked to each other, they told each other: ‘You know, I’m going to do this experiment’ and they would describe in detail what they were going to do and what they hope to get from it. Science got a lot more competitive since then, people don’t talk about stuff, now phage got a resurgence; it would be great if the phage community could re-invent the situation there.”
Laudatio for Ian Molineux
There’s a particular kind of scientist who doesn’t set out to become a cornerstone of a research field, they just keep asking curiosity-driven questions, for decades, about the same phage, and one day you look up and realize the whole field has been quietly built around their answers. Tonight we’re honoring one of those scientists.
Ian Molineux has spent more than 35 years studying bacteriophage T7, and if you think that sounds like a narrow way to spend a career, you clearly haven’t seen what he’s done with it. T7 under his hands became a window onto some of the most fundamental questions in virology: how does a virus actually get its genome into a cell?
He showed that T7 genome entry is a well-organized, staged, motor-driven process. He put it best himself, in a paper title that still makes people smile: “no syringes please.” It takes real confidence to overturn a textbook model of infection and make it stick. And he didn’t stop at mechanism. Working with structural biologists using cryo-electron tomography, he helped show, how the T7 tail rebuilds itself during infection, watching the phage particle remodel its own architecture and seeing his cartoon models actually come to life.
And did you know, long before this, Ian was actually the second person ever to perform a PCR? In 1971, a young Ian Molineux, following his PhD in Oxford, working side by side with and Klenow and Khorana, he published a paper describing a “repair replication” of short synthetic DNAs, a paper recognized as one of the conceptual ancestors of PCR, decades before anyone had built a thermal cycler or heard of Taq polymerase. https://doi.org/10.1016/0022-2836(71)90469-4
But even more importantly, Ian has given so much to the phage research community. For over two decades, he served as Editor-in-chief for Virology. In fact, when I was talking to Rob Lavigne in preparing this speech, we realized both of us had our very first research paper edited by Ian. Beyond this role, Ian served as chair to the ICTV microbial viruses subcommittee twenty years ago and was recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2010.
But most importantly, Ian has been a kind collaborator and generous mentor to so many of us, driven by a deep and focused knowledge, that he was happy to share at many conferences like this one. Ask almost anyone who has come up in this field over the last three decades, and they’ll tell you about a moment, in a hallway in his lab at the University of Texas at Austin, over coffee, or at a poster session: Ian always takes the time to actually engage with their work. Not to be polite, but just because of his genuinely curiosity for the science and the person behind it.
